What is Shockwave Therapy?

Shockwave Therapy, also known as Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy (ESWT), is a non-invasive method used to facilitate healing in injured areas by delivering shock waves. These shock waves are highly effective and initiate biological regeneration at the cellular level.

The treatment employs technology that delivers short, frequent, and high-intensity bursts of mechanical energy as shockwaves into soft tissues that are injured, scarred, contain adhesions, or are painful and inflamed.

Therapeutic Effects of Spark Wave/SoftWave Therapy include:

- Pain relief through an analgesic effect
- Anti-inflammatory action that:
- Reduces the pro-inflammatory immune response
- Decreases cellular apoptosis and limits necrosis
- Offers an antibacterial effect in treating infections
- Promotes the expression of endogenous growth factors
- Angiogenesis, which enhances vascularity and blood circulation, improving tissue supply
- Ossification, or the formation of new bone tissue
- Stimulation of natural anabolic and growth functions across various tissues such as skin, bones, cartilage, muscles (both smooth and striated), and nerves
- Activation of stem cells leading to increased metabolism, proliferation, migration, and differentiation
- Tissue remodeling and regeneration.

Shock wave therapy is not a new treatment.

The use of shockwave technology in medicine underwent systematic changes starting in the 1950s.

German research into the interaction between shockwaves and biological tissue in animals commenced in 1968.

In 1971, Haeusler and Kiefer were the first to report the in-vitro disintegration of a kidney stone using shockwaves without direct contact, a process known as lithotripsy.

The first experiments to explore the effects of shockwaves on bones began in 1985.

By the early 1990s, the first reports were published on the use of shockwave therapy for calcific tendinitis. Subsequent research led to the successful treatment of epicondylitis and heel spurs, with success rates reported between 70% and 80%.

Spark Wave/SoftWave technology is a direct descendant of lithotripsy.

The marketplace features many terms that are conceptually similar but distinct in nature.

These include:

- Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy (ESWT)
- Extracorporeal Pulse Activation Therapy (EPAT)
- Shock Wave Therapy
- Pressure Wave
- Acoustic Wave/Sound Wave
- Acoustic Wave Therapy (AWT)
- Radial Shock Wave Therapy (RSWT)
- Extracorporeal Acoustic Wave Therapy (EAWT)
- Low Intensity Shockwave Therapy (LISWT) for Erectile Dysfunction (ED)
- Acoustic Pneumatic/Ballistic
- Electromagnetic
- Piezoelectric
- Electrohydraulic
- Focused
- Unfocused/Parallel
- Radial

A true shock wave is defined by a single, predominantly positive pressure pulse followed by a relatively minor tensile wave. There are three types of authentic shock wave therapies and one type that is mistakenly considered as such:

- ELECTROHYDRAULIC – Broadly focused or parallel, often misconceived as unfocused
- ELECTROMAGNETIC – Focused
- PIEZOELECTRIC – Focused

The ACOUSTIC PNEUMATIC/RADIAL type is not classified as a true shock wave therapy.
